WOMEN IN HIGH PLACES: LEADING THE GLOBAL CHALLENGE OF MEDICINE

On July 27, Innovara and the Korean Research-based Pharmaceutical Industry Association (KRPIA) jointly hosted the Inaugural Meeting of Women in High Places: Leading the Global Challenge of Medicine (“WIHP”). The meeting opened by welcoming remarks by Oak Yeon Kim, President of KRPIA. Congresswoman Dr. InSook Park (Sanuri Party, head of Healthcare and Welfare Committee) also joined the meeting to greet and welcome the women leaders after Ms. Kim. Two key note speakers followed: Ms. Kyung Hee Choi, VP and head of Asian Health Services, including the Korean Medical Program, at Holy Name Medical Center (Teaneck, NJ), and Ms. Barri Blauvelt, CEO, Innovara, Inc.

Ms. Choi shared her journey from her childhood as the daughter of a farmer in Korea, to becoming one of the highest ranking, most powerful Asian-American woman on Wall Street, through her personal experiences on 9/11, and how that shaped her decision to leave Wall Street and dedicate herself to helping her fellow Asian Americans (especially Koreans) in the New York City area to have better access to and quality of healthcare.

Ms. Blauvelt spoke about the history of “WIHP”, which coincidentally also held its first meeting in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, and which advances the ability of the top women in healthcare leadership positions around the world to network and contribute to population healthcare advancement.

Following these speakers, the group of 20 women leaders shared their own experiences leading initiatives in health care in Korea that were “bigger than the brand”, that helped to support important underserved population health needs.  The group then shared ideas for future potential collaborations through KRPIA to serve Korean population needs and also advance leadership of women in medicine, science and industry in Korea. 9 ideas were identified and are now being refined further and prioritized by these leaders.  We eagerly await to learn their
