With a handheld ophthalmoscope and smartphone camera, Optoview allows PCPs to send photos of their patient’s retina to local eye care specialists for a thorough diagnosis. The app can also store unlimited patient information and exam data, and generate reports for reimbursement.

Epocrates (Essentials $159.99; Plus $174.99)
Epocrates allows the user to review drug information in depth, including interactions, alternate medications, and pill ID. The app also provides a BMI calculator, medical news, and more information on drug coverage provided by select insurance companies. The latest update is rated 4/5 stars on the iTunes app store, and boasts that “1 out of 2 physicians rely on Epocrates to enable better patient care.”

UpToDate ($400 annually)
UpToDate is a richly-populated, easy-to-use database of the most current medical research. Geared towards medical students, it includes detailed articles, clinical calculators, and a list of secondary lines of therapy. It is a bit pricy, but SteadyHealth claims that it is “worth every penny.”

Docphin (FREE)
Docphin helps you customize your journal lists, allowing you to focus on research that is relevant to your interests. You can read, download, and save articles directly from the app, as well as share folders of articles and receive alerts regarding new research. The app integrates with your institution’s library and stores your login so that you do not have to enter it in each time you download an article.

For $9, you can send the report directly to a cardiac technician, and for $19, you can send the report to a U.S. Board Certified Cardiologist for a tailored recommendation.

Medisafe Medication Tracker claims to increase medication adherence from 50% to 86% by organizing medications, sending helpful reminders, and providing patient information. You can also enter in your blood glucose, cholesterol, pain level, pulse, weight, temperature, and more to make your progress reports more detailed. A Medifriend alert system helps you and others keep each other accountable.
